why do you have friends????
that was the question of my instructor in philosophy....
he looked at me... one of the instructor-look that would tell you that you are in the "hot-seat"...
not knowing to what and how to answer... i just bowed my head... and at the back of my mind... why do i have friends????
he called me to recite...
i stood up... still not knowing what to say...
he stated the question... why do you have friends?... bakit ka may kaibigan???
i stared at him... then look up the ceiling... think.... think... think...
then i blurted it out... "bakit nga ba?"
he said... yes, why do you have friends...
then i wanted to sit... so i finally said... i have friends because of their company...
that was the simplest question i have heard... but the hell... i do not have a precise answer... that one minute of standing... not knowing what to say.. seems to be so long...
then the answers written on the board... answers of the class... including mine...
"help. company. shoulder to cry on. etcetera....etcetera...."
then he said you are voilent men and women....
what???!!!!! i said to myself...
he continued... yes... you are violent... why??... because, you see, if these are your answers to the question, would friends be so boring if i would read these words... and here.... you have friends because you are thinking of your self....
ok... so he is now making sense... so.... then i nodded in agreement...
he continued.... "YOU HAVE FRIENDS BECAUSE... YOU NEED HELP.... YOU NEED COMPANY... YOU NEED A SHOULDER TO CRY ON..." it is all for your sake... your personal interests....
those words sank slowly.... then i lost track of what he was saying... i was busy reflecting on what i heard...
so am i really selfish?
i reflected on much i used the word "I"...
what if i forget the one single "I" and think of all the other "I's"... my friends for example..
question after question... but no lined up answers at the back of my head...
but i think i have to disagree and agree...
now my friends in tabulas....
i ask you one simple question:
"WHY DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS?"

we have friends because of YOUR needs. To avoid loneliness, to bring about laughter, and so on...but in this process we get something out of it...but don't you think our friends do to? :)
